Africa 2030: A CEO’s View on the Businesses That Will Shape the Future By Ifeanyi Akosionu, MD, inq. Nigeria

I was walking through the innovation halls of MWC25 in Barcelona earlier this year, surrounded by holograms, predictive algorithms, and AI-driven customer experiences. Somewhere between a demo of next-gen satellite IoT and a talk on programmable networks, it hit me: the future we’ve been theorizing about is already here—and Africa cannot afford to watch it from the sidelines.

But let me take you a step back.

When I first stepped into leadership at inq. Nigeria, I wasn’t just stepping into a tech company—I was stepping into a mission. A mission to make emerging technologies real, accessible, and transformative for African businesses. And that mission is far from complete.

A Shift from Survivors to Scalers: The Data Speaks

Traditionally, African businesses—especially in highly regulated environments—have had one primary goal: survival. But this decade is different. We see a clear shift happening, from Lagos to Nairobi to Johannesburg. Our top companies are no longer solely building for resilience; they’re building for scale. And at the heart of that scale are Cloud, Connectivity, AI, and Cybersecurity. These aren’t just tech buzzwords; they are the infrastructure of future empires. Did I say future empires? Scratch that. They are the fundamental foundation for innovation convergence for today’s enterprises. Hence, why it brings me great pleasure to announce the arrival of the inq. Edge Sentry solution that brings all these together bundled in one box for our most valued customers at a fraction of the cost contrasted against separate instances of cloud, connectivity, AI, and enterprise security deployments. Consider the data: recent reports indicate a robust 1.9% increase in internet users in Nigeria between January 2024 and January 2025 and a significant 64.0% mobile connectivity penetration across the Nigerian population . These figures underscore the accelerating digital maturity across the continent.

Let me paint a picture.

Imagine a logistics company in Nigeria managing 5,000 deliveries daily. With inq.’s Edge AI solutions, they’re now predicting route bottlenecks before they happen, reducing fraud losses by 60% using real-time data orchestration across the cloud. Or a bank in Kenya leveraging AI-driven cybersecurity to proactively detect and prevent fraudulent transactions, safeguarding millions of customer accounts. These aren’t dreams. They are happening now.

The CEO’s Toolkit Is Changing: Data Fluency in a Connected World

If you’re a CEO reading this, you already know your battlefield has shifted. It’s not just about balance sheets anymore; it’s about data fluency, real-time decision-making, and platform partnerships. We’ve stopped talking about “tech products” and started delivering business outcomes. Want to reduce operational overhead and associated costs? Take out expensive system inefficiencies? Improve Customer and User Experience? Scale to new markets without touching infrastructure? Shift focus from complex IT systems, and distracting connectivity challenges, to reallocation of time and effort to revenue impacting and correlated core parts of your business? That’s not just what we do, that’s where as a business we live and thrive.

And the truth is, African innovation doesn’t look like Silicon Valley’s—and it shouldn’t. Our markets are younger, faster-moving, and infinitely more complex. But therein lies our edge. When we combine the richness of our problems with the sharpness of new tools, we unlock new frontiers.

The Future: Hybrid, Borderless, and Smart – A Global Perspective

By 2030, the African companies that will dominate will be:

  • Hybrid: Seamlessly blending physical and digital operations to reach wider customer bases and optimize service delivery. Think of the rise of fintech solutions integrated with traditional banking networks, or e-commerce platforms empowering local artisans. Globally, this mirrors the trend of omnichannel experiences and the blurring lines between online and offline retail.
  • Borderless: Leveraging connectivity and cloud infrastructure to expand across African borders and even compete globally. We’re already seeing Nigerian startups expanding into East Africa and South African tech companies gaining traction in Europe. This aligns with the global movement towards interconnected digital economies.
  • Smart: Embedding AI and data analytics into every aspect of their operations, from personalized customer experiences to predictive maintenance and optimized supply chains. This mirrors the global race towards AI-driven automation and intelligent decision-making, where African businesses have a unique opportunity to leapfrog legacy systems.

Navigating the Hurdles: Addressing Africa’s Unique Challenges

However, this journey is not without its obstacles. While the shift from survival is evident, we must confront specific challenges:

  • Infrastructure Gaps: While connectivity is improving, reliable and affordable digital infrastructure remains a hurdle in many regions. Collaborative efforts between governments and private sector players, like inq.’s hyperscale cloud deployments, are crucial to bridge this gap.
  • Regulatory Landscape: Navigating diverse and sometimes complex regulatory environments across different African nations requires agility and proactive engagement. Harmonization of policies and fostering innovation-friendly regulations are essential.
  • Skills Development: A significant skills gap in areas like AI, data science, and cybersecurity needs to be addressed through investments in education, vocational training, and strategic partnerships with global institutions.

A Call to Action: Building a Digitally Empowered Africa

The opportunity for Africa to leapfrog traditional development pathways through digital transformation is immense. To realize this potential, we need a concerted effort:

  • For Businesses: Embrace a cloud-first mentality, invest in data literacy, and actively explore AI and cybersecurity solutions as core strategic pillars.
  • For Governments: Prioritize investments in digital infrastructure, foster a conducive regulatory environment, and champion digital skills development initiatives.
  • For Innovators: Prioritizing corporate innovation and co-creation between businesses, their service providers and the innovation ecosystem for the development of uniquely African and/or afro-centric products and solutions that scale at the right cost and price points.

inq. Nigeria is committed to being a catalyst in this transformation. Our work with large multinationals, global non-governmental organizations, logistics & mobility companies, financial services institutions and tech startups is just the beginning. By emphasizing and prioritizing partnerships, investing in talent and embracing corporate innovation, and deploying cutting-edge but hyper-localized technologies solving real problems in our markets, we continue to empower African businesses to not just survive, but to thrive on the global stage. The future of African business is bright, hybrid, borderless, and smart – and it’s unfolding right now. Let’s build it together
